Death toll from M7.1 Kumamoto earthquake rises to 34
More than 10,000 people remain in shelters, while 23,000 homes lack power and 75,000 are without water.
The death toll from the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu in southwestern Japan rose to 34 on Thursday. Local authorities are still checking whether nine deaths were directly linked to the disaster. The prefectural government also recorded 22 minor injuries, 39 moderate injuries and five serious injuries, while the severity of injuries to 20 others has not yet been determined. The Tuesday (28/7) quake reached a maximum intensity of 7 in Uki and Hikawa. More than 10.000 people remain in evacuation centers, about 23.000 households are without electricity, and 75.000 households have no water. The Kyushu Shinkansen line between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo remains closed as damage inspections continue.
