Two oil slicks have appeared in Iranian waters as a separate tanker spill off Oman keeps spreading, raising fresh fears of environmental damage around the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters-verified satellite images showed one slick off Qeshm Island and another near Sirri Island. Environmental researcher Wim Zwijnenburg said the Qeshm slick appeared to include heavy fuel oil, with a diluted trail stretching about 160 km. Maritime security sources said the Liberia-flagged Minoan Pioneer was hit by an unknown projectile near Oman on Aug. 3, and monitoring data pointed to that vessel as a likely source. Meanwhile, the grounded tanker Caroline Bezengi off Oman has leaked Russian crude into a protected marine area, creating a slick estimated at more than 2,000 square km.
