Trump renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

The change applies only to the U.S. federal government, while Canada rejects it and a 50% tariff fight intensifies.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America," effective immediately. The move came after U.S.-Canada trade talks failed and Washington imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Ottawa is preparing retaliatory tariffs of similar value on about 700 U.S. products. Lake Ontario borders New York and Canada; about 52% of its surface area lies in Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change and said the lake is "called Lake Ontario, today and forever." According to BBC, Trump’s order binds only the U.S. federal government’s use of the name, and the Interior Department has 30 days to update the official geographic names database.
