Google Maps relabels Lake Ontario as Lake America for US users
What's new: users in Canada still see Lake Ontario, while users outside both countries see both names.
Google Maps now labels Lake Ontario as Lake America for users in the United States after President Donald Trump’s executive order changed the name in the US Geographic Names Information System. Google said its maps follow official government sources, so the change applies only for US users. People in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while users elsewhere will see both names. Trump ordered the renaming on Aug. 27 as trade tensions with Canada escalated. The order does not affect Canadian naming conventions. Google made a similar map label change in 2025, when it switched the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America for US users after another Trump order.
