Palangka Raya wildfires reach 306 as flames near Balsam Toll

Palangka Raya extended its emergency status 29 days as police probe a 3-hectare peat fire at KM 31 on the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll.

Crews are still battling forest and land fires in Palangka Raya as hot, dry weather raises the risk of the flames spreading, especially near settlements and areas with limited water. The Palangka Raya city BPBD recorded 306 karhutla incidents from June 1 to August 21, with a total of 264.79 hectares burned; the most were in Jekan Raya, followed by Sebangau, Pahandut and Bukit Batu. The city’s emergency response status for land and forest fires was also extended by 29 days. In another part of Kalimantan, a joint team extinguished a 3-hectare peatland fire at KM 31 on the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll road in Sungai Merdeka, Samboja Barat, Kutai Kartanegara. The fire, seen around 19.30 WITA, was fully put out by 22.30 WITA, but police are still investigating the cause.
