Polda Aceh steps up patrols after unrest at Aceh Peace Day
Security remains in place around Masjid Raya Baiturrahman after clashes were triggered by the raising of the month-and-star flag.
Polda Aceh said conditions in Banda Aceh had returned to normal after unrest during a joint remembrance of prayers and blessings marking the 21st Aceh Peace Day at Masjid Raya Baiturrahman on Saturday, Aug. 15. Polda Aceh public relations chief Joko Krisdiyanto said joint personnel were still on standby around the area, while patrols would be increased in several parts of Aceh. The unrest broke out after a crowd raised the month-and-star flag on the mosque's main pole. Officers had earlier asked that the raising stop, but the crowd continued until clashes and throwing of objects spread to the street in front of the mosque. Police then dispersed the crowd with tear gas. During the 21st anniversary of peace in Aceh, Jusuf Kalla and Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah both stressed the importance of maintaining peace to support development and prosperity.
