Trump weighs Iran deal or renewed US strikes after midterms

What's next: Washington has moved more forces toward the Persian Gulf as Iran steps up ship attacks near the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump said he is nearing a decision on whether to pursue a deal with Tehran or resume US attacks on Iran after the Nov. 3 midterm elections. He said there would be no strike on Oct. 25, but the administration has sent additional forces, including a third aircraft carrier group, toward the Persian Gulf. The US is also reducing some diplomatic and military staffing in parts of the Middle East as threats from Iran and the Iran-backed Houthis grow. Shipping and maritime security officials say Iran has intensified attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz, causing heavier damage by using guided missiles rather than drones. Iran is also preparing possible retaliation across the region, including against Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
