Forest-fire haze from Indonesia pollutes 7 Sarawak areas

108 schools in Serian, Sarawak, were closed after pollution readings topped 200, while Singapore warned of haze risk in coming days.

Haze from forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan is starting to weigh on air quality in neighboring countries. In Sarawak, Malaysia, seven areas recorded Air Pollution Index readings above 100 on Wednesday afternoon, with Serian the highest at 165, followed by Sri Aman at 161 and Kuching at 160. Malaysian authorities also closed 108 schools in Serian when the API exceeded 200. In Singapore, the National Environment Agency, or NEA, warned the city-state could experience hazy conditions if fires in southern and central Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan spread further. The NEA said dry weather is expected to continue, with southeast to southwest winds likely to carry haze toward Singapore in the next few days.
