Bahlil Delays Coal Export Duty Talks as Formula Is Drafted

The government is holding back details while weighing global prices, world demand and the policy's impact on mining investment.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the government has not decided whether to impose an export duty on coal shipments. He said he has agreed with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa not to discuss the details yet because the formula is still being drafted. According to Bahlil, it is not the right time to go into specifics amid considerations of macroeconomic conditions and the global commodities market. The government is still monitoring world coal prices and market demand so the move will not disrupt mining investment, he said. Bahlil also stressed that existing mining contracts will remain unchanged and that domestic coal needs will continue to take priority.
