Foreign languages introduced from 1st grade, English mandatory in 2027
Kemendikdasmen clarified that at elementary level, languages other than English are only for introduction, not full subjects.
President Prabowo Subianto urged that foreign languages be introduced starting in 1st grade, but the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said the policy does not mean all foreign languages will become special subjects. Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti said that at the elementary level, languages other than English will only be introduced. English will become a mandatory subject starting in 3rd grade in 2027. In his annual address at the MPR/DPR/DPD RI complex in Jakarta, Prabowo listed the languages that should be learned, including English, Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, and Russian. He said children under 11-12 years old absorb languages faster and that the skill is important for job opportunities in the international market.
