Forest fire haze blankets Sumut, visibility falls to 1 km
BBMKG said the haze may have drifted in from southern Sumatra and Kalimantan, while air quality in several areas turned moderate to unhealthy.
Haze from forest and land fires has blanketed Sumatera Utara, reducing air quality and visibility in several areas. BBMKG Wilayah I Medan recorded the haze spreading across the entire province, with air in Kota Medan falling into the unhealthy category. In monitoring on 15 October 2026 at 09.00 WIB, the Kualanamu, Aek Godang and Silangit Meteorological Stations recorded visibility falling to about 1-3 kilometers. BBMKG Wilayah I Medan head Hendro Nugroho said surface wind analysis showed the haze could have drifted in from southern Sumatra and Kalimantan. In Sumut, satellite imagery also detected three moderate hot spots, including in Labuhanbatu and Tapanuli Selatan.
