Yusril says corruption cannot be beaten by law, KPK alone

He said reform would take one or two generations, driven by early ethics education and stronger moral foundations.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said corruption in Indonesia cannot be eradicated only through laws, law enforcement officers, the Corruption Eradication Commission, and corruption courts. At the inauguration of Cetiya Tian Shi Hua Guan Di Jing Se in Pantai Indah Kapuk, North Jakarta, on Sunday, Yusril said the root problem lies in weak ethical and moral awareness. He said Indonesia already has adequate legal instruments, but corrupt practices continue to recur. Yusril also said that ethical foundations must be supported by the religious beliefs that live in Indonesia. He urged ethics and character education from an early age in schools, while estimating that an anti-corruption culture shift would only be visible in one or two generations.
