US says it disabled cargo ship trying to reach an Iranian port
The US military said it fired on the Lian Star after the vessel ignored warnings and tried to breach a blockade of Iranian ports.
The U.S. military said Saturday it disabled a cargo ship headed for an Iranian port after the vessel ignored repeated warnings in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Central Command said forces fired a missile into the engine room of the Gambia-flagged Lian Star overnight, leaving it adrift and unboarded. Washington imposed the blockade on April 17 after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz during the wider war that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28. The military said it has now stopped six ships trying to breach the blockade, allowed one through and redirected 116 others. President Donald Trump has not decided whether to back a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, while Iran warned that interfering military vessels could be targeted.
