U.N. rapporteur urges Indonesia to detain Israeli soldiers on holiday
Francesca Albanese said Indonesia must investigate and, if evidence exists, treat them as suspects in crimes in Palestine.
The U.N. Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, urged Indonesia to detain Israeli soldiers who come on holiday if there are indications they were involved in the killing of Palestinians. In a discussion at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, on Wednesday (21/10), she said authorities should investigate soldiers who boast about their actions on TikTok, Telegram, Facebook, or Instagram after serving in Palestine. Albanese stressed the call was not discrimination against Jews, but a duty for a state that upholds the law to avoid normalizing apartheid and genocide. At the forum organized by Amnesty International Indonesia and Kontras, she also said civil society should pressure the government if authorities hesitate to act because of outside pressure.
