Trump pays E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million in sex abuse case

What's next: Trump is still challenging a separate $83.3 million defamation award, though the Supreme Court let the earlier verdict stand.

President Donald Trump has paid writer E. Jean Carroll more than $5.6 million tied to a 2023 federal jury verdict that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, according to a court filing in Manhattan. The payment covered the $5 million award plus post-judgment interest, with the funds disbursed July 9 to Carroll's law firm and then transferred to her, CNBC reported. A judge had ordered payment a day earlier after rejecting Trump's attempt to delay collection. The Supreme Court in late June refused to hear Trump's appeal of that verdict. Carroll separately won an $83.3 million defamation judgment in January 2024, which Trump continues to contest.
