Trump moves U.S. to guard Strait of Hormuz as Iran strikes Gulf

Why it matters: New attacks and threats to the ceasefire jolted oil prices and raised risks for global tanker traffic through the chokepoint.

President Donald Trump said the United States was taking over security in the Strait of Hormuz as the heaviest U.S.-Iran fighting since their ceasefire shook the Gulf. Trump said Washington would become the waterway’s “guardian” and seek reimbursement from wealthy nations for protecting shipping. Iran warned it could stop honoring the June memorandum of understanding if the U.S. does not meet its commitments, even as talks continued with mediators from Qatar, Pakistan and Oman. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched new strikes on Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Oman, while U.S. Central Command said it hit dozens of Iranian targets to curb attacks on maritime traffic. WTI crude climbed toward $74 a barrel on supply fears.
