Supreme Court seeks $228 million as threats to justices climb

What's new: Court police expect threats to rise 38% this year, and justices cited swatting, drones and AI-driven cyberattacks.

The Supreme Court asked Congress for $228 million in funding, a 53% increase from last year, as justices warned that threats against them are rising sharply. In a rare House Appropriations Committee appearance, Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan described mounting security risks, including swatting incidents, drone threats and a surge in cyberattacks amplified by AI. Barrett said she was targeted in a swatting hoax about six weeks ago and recalled being sent home with a bulletproof vest after the 2022 abortion ruling. Kagan said Supreme Court police expect threats to jump 38% this year. Lawmakers also cited 370 threats against federal judges as of July 1, up 31% from last year.
