Supreme Court lets New Hampshire bar student IDs for voting
Why it matters: The order takes effect less than two weeks before a closely contested New Hampshire Senate election.
The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for New Hampshire to fully bar student IDs for voting in the midterm elections. The justices granted an emergency appeal backed by Republicans and blocked state guidance that had allowed student IDs as a backup form of identification. The court pointed to the principle that judges should not alter election rules close to Election Day. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the lone public dissenter. New Hampshire this year removed student IDs from the list of accepted documents for getting a ballot, and a judge had earlier left that law in place while pausing the state’s stricter guidance.
