Supreme Court blocks Hawaii limits on guns in stores and hotels

Why it matters: The 6-3 ruling lets guns enter many private businesses unless owners explicitly post a ban.

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a Hawaii law that required people to get permission before carrying guns into private businesses such as stores, hotels, shopping malls and gas stations. In a 6-3 ruling, the court held that people may bring firearms onto private property open to the public unless the owner specifically bars them. Hawaii enacted the 2023 measure after the court's 2022 decision expanding the right to carry guns in public. State officials argued the law protected the rights of property owners to decide whether firearms were allowed. The case was brought by a gun-rights group and three Maui residents. Similar laws in about four other states have also faced court challenges.
