Singapore welcomes Prabowo haze steps, rebukes Indonesia official
What's new: Singapore said Prabowo accepted foreign firefighting help as haze worsened and criticized remarks that the city-state benefits from Indonesia's forests.
Singapore welcomed steps by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to curb the forest fires driving haze across the region, while sharply criticizing an Indonesian official's remarks that Singapore gets its oxygen from Indonesia's forests. Senior Minister K. Shanmugam said on Oct. 19 that Prabowo had approved foreign assistance, ordered action against slash-and-burn burning on peat land and put more focus on prevention. He also pointed to the replacement of disaster agency chief Suharyanto with Kristomei Sianturi. Singapore and Malaysia have both offered help to fight the fires. Shanmugam said the haze was hurting public health in Singapore and called the oxygen comments by Government Communications Agency head Syahganda Nainggolan “not right” as the region suffers.
