Serbian UNIFIL peacekeeper killed by mortar in south Lebanon

Two other UNIFIL personnel were wounded, and the source of the fire remains unclear amid a recently extended ceasefire.

A U.N. peacekeeping soldier from Serbia, Sergeant Milovan Jovanivić, was killed by a mortar attack while on duty at a UNIFIL post near Marjayoun in southern Lebanon on Thursday morning. UNIFIL said two other personnel were also wounded and are being treated at the force's medical facility. No certainty has been reached on who fired the rounds. The incident came as the Israeli military and Hizbullah were still exchanging fire in southern Lebanon, only hours before Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend the ceasefire. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for an immediate investigation. UNIFIL said deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are a serious violation of international humanitarian law and could amount to a war crime.
