Polri bill panel revises Kapolri retirement age to fit presidential needs

A clause added before the plenary session opens the door to extensions beyond the 1-year addition agreed the day before.

The Polri bill panel in Commission III of the DPR again changed the retirement-age rule for four-star officers, or the Kapolri, ahead of a plenary meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. If the day before lawmakers had agreed on a retirement age of 60 with a maximum one-year extension by presidential decision, the new wording adds the phrase “or according to needs determined based on a presidential decision.” The proposal was introduced by Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej and approved by all factions. In earlier talks, the government and the DPR also agreed on a retirement age of 59 for enlisted personnel and noncommissioned officers, while junior officers, middle-ranking officers and senior officers were set at 60. The government said different retirement ages are needed to maintain motivation, career progression and regeneration within the Polri.
