Judge orders release of Trump’s $5.8 million to E. Jean Carroll
What’s next: Trump appealed the payout order after the Supreme Court declined to hear his challenge to the 2023 civil verdict.
A federal judge in New York ordered that more than $5.8 million held by the court be released to writer E. Jean Carroll, including interest on the $5 million judgment a jury awarded in 2023. The verdict found President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and defaming her after she went public with the allegation. Judge Lewis Kaplan pointed to an agreement requiring the funds to be paid after the Supreme Court refused to take Trump’s appeal on June 29. Trump’s lawyers then asked the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to halt Kaplan’s order while they pursue a rehearing bid at the high court.
