Iran accelerates military buildup amid talks with US
The move comes as Qatar and Pakistan revive mediation on nuclear issues, sanctions and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran is accelerating efforts to strengthen the combat capability of its armed forces amid attempts to revive talks with the United States. Iranian Defense Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi on Sunday (1/11) said Tehran is building combat capability “without geographical limits” under the direction of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. He also warned that any attack would be met with an appropriate, firm and effective response. The statement came as Qatar and Pakistan continued mediation between Washington and Tehran, following reports of progress in indirect talks in Doha. Discussions cover Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief and arrangements for navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions have remained high since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 Februari triggered Tehran retaliation in the region.
