Democrats win House and Senate in sweeping 2026 midterm reversal

Why it matters: The party can drive the congressional agenda for Trump’s final two years, even with his veto power intact.

Democrats won back control of both the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, flipping Republican-held Senate seats in conservative states and strengthening their hand against President Donald Trump for the rest of his term. The gains also extended to governorships and state legislatures, broadening the party’s reach beyond Washington. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin cast the outcome as a voter demand for action on affordability, health care and what he described as a system tilted toward the wealthy. Even with Democrats controlling Congress, any major legislation will still have to contend with Trump’s veto authority.
