Trump blames Iran fuel-price shock as Republicans absorb losses

What's new: Trump tied the setback to higher gasoline prices and singled out Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after Democrats won the governorship there.

Donald Trump sought to explain Republican election losses by arguing that the conflict with Iran drove up US gasoline prices and hurt voters' willingness to back his party. In interviews and social media posts after the results came in, Trump said people supported his actions on Iran but balked at the short-term hit at the pump. As defeats mounted, he also turned on fellow Republicans and conservative media. He attacked Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after Democrats captured the state's governorship for the first time in more than 30 years, and he complained that Fox News gave too much attention to Democrats on election night.
