China pushes back after US hit 60 targets with new Iran sanctions

Why it matters: Beijing signaled it may act to protect its firms and shipping ties with Tehran from new US penalties.

China pushed back Tuesday against new US sanctions tied to Iran, saying its cooperation with Tehran falls within international law and should not be disrupted. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing was closely watching developments and would take "all necessary measures" to protect China’s rights and interests. The response came after the United States imposed sanctions on 60 individuals, entities and vessels on Monday in an effort to squeeze what Washington called Iran’s economic lifeline, while stopping short of its harshest options.
