M7.1 quake shakes Kumamoto, Japan issues tsunami warning

JMA said waves could reach 1 meter, and nine aftershocks were recorded by 15:03 local time.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto in southern Japan on Tuesday (28/7) at 14:27 local time, triggering a tsunami warning and an earthquake emergency status for several prefectures on Kyushu island. The Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA, recorded maximum intensity 7, with the epicenter on land at a depth of 10 kilometers. A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas along the Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea, with waves potentially reaching 1 meter. Authorities also activated emergency alerts for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki. By 15:03, JMA had recorded nine aftershocks; the largest measured magnitude 4.5 at 14:29. No detailed reports on casualties or damage were immediately available.
