Japan quake kills 13 as rescuers search collapsed mall and homes
What's new: More than 9,000 people are in shelters, 36,900 homes lack power and Kyushu bullet train service remains suspended.
A powerful earthquake in southwestern Japan has killed at least 13 people, with rescuers searching a collapsed shopping mall, damaged homes and an industrial site for survivors. The quake struck the Kumamoto area on Kyushu, where Japan's Self-Defense Forces joined emergency crews in Kashima after the second floor of an Aeon Mall collapsed following an explosion suspected to be linked to a gas leak. At the Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro factory, a collapsed chimney trapped workers; officials said seven people were still feared trapped after two survivors and two bodies were pulled from the debris. Airport operations were partly resuming, but some flights were still at risk of cancellation.
