Zelenskyy presses for Russia sanctions after Trump puts them on hold

What's next: Zelenskyy said Ukraine is seeking a three-way meeting with Trump and Putin as Russian attacks intensify before winter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged supporters to defend a new U.S. sanctions package against Russia after President Donald Trump signed an executive order pausing the measures just days before they were due to take effect. The package, known as the Lindsey Graham Act, was designed to target Russian officials, banks and tankers moving Russian energy exports. Zelenskyy called the move unfortunate and warned that blocking the sanctions would encourage Moscow to keep up attacks. The decision deepened strains between Kyiv and Washington as overnight Russian strikes killed at least four people in Ukraine. Zelenskyy also said Ukraine's negotiator Rustem Umerov met Jared Kushner and that the U.S. was trying to arrange a meeting involving Zelenskyy, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
