Yaa Qawiyyu tradition in Klaten distributes 6.5 tons of apem
Thousands crowded Jatinom for the Sapar-month ritual, an annual religious tourism draw tied to local heritage.
The Yaa Qawiyyu Apem Sebaran tradition was held again in Jatinom, Klaten Regency, Central Java, on Friday (31/7), with around 6.5 tons of apem handed out to the public. Thousands of residents packed the site and scrambled to catch the apem distributed during the annual tradition. Yaa Qawiyyu is held every month of Sapar in the Javanese calendar as an effort to preserve local cultural and religious heritage. The tradition is also held to commemorate Ki Ageng Gribig, a figure known as a spreader of Islam in the Jatinom area. In addition to being maintained as an inherited tradition, Sebaran Apem Yaa Qawiyyu is also a religious tourism attraction that draws visitors from various regions every year.
