WWII Memorial in Washington defaced with paint and soap suds

The World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington was vandalized Aug. 13 with pink paint and soap that left one fountain bubbling over, prompting a police investigation. Graffiti reading "Clean hands Dirty $" was sprayed on part of the memorial, and U.S. Park Police cordoned off the area. The Interior Department called the damage "an utter disgrace" and said the person responsible would be found. The memorial, dedicated in 2004, honors the 16 million Americans who served in World War II and more than 400,000 who died. The site had reopened in May after a $4 million renovation project that upgraded its fountains and lighting.
