Dutch national in Bali gets 3 years for growing cannabis

He was also fined Rp510 juta, far below prosecutors' 9-year request, after the court rejected a health-therapy defense.

The Denpasar District Court sentenced Dutch national Nirul Rashim Abdoelrazak to three years in prison after finding him guilty of growing and possessing cannabis hydroponically in Denpasar, Bali. The panel of judges led by Imam Lukmanul Hakim also imposed a fine of Rp510 juta, with a substitute sentence of 141 days in prison. The judge said Nirul violated Article 111 paragraph (2) of the Narcotics Law. His claim that the cannabis was used to support health recovery was rejected, but his health condition was still considered a mitigating factor, leaving the sentence below prosecutors' request for nine years. The case came to light after Polda Bali arrested Nirul at his home in Ubung Kaja, Denpasar Utara, on 1 October 2025.
