WHO chief visits Congo Ebola epicenter as cases top 900

WHO's director-general visited Bunia as Congo's Ebola outbreak reached 906 suspected cases and aid groups warned the response is lagging.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Bunia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday as a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak continued to outpace the response. Health officials reported 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths in Congo, while Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death. Tedros was due to visit a treatment center and meet local authorities, health workers and affected families. Doctors Without Borders said the outbreak was spreading at an unprecedented pace and called for more testing, faster deployment of aid workers and steady medical supply access. The European Union sent aid to Ituri this week, and the United States announced an additional $80 million in support.
