WALHI audit finds 52 kg of diapers dominate Sidem Beach trash
From 22 sacks of waste, 153.63 kilograms of inorganic trash were audited to push stronger producer responsibility.
WALHI Jawa Timur found disposable diapers were the largest waste item on Pantai Sidem, Kabupaten Tulungagung, after a trash audit on July 18. Of the 153.63 kilograms of identified inorganic waste, diapers accounted for 52 kilograms, followed by about 10 kilograms of branded sachet packaging and about 34 kilograms of unbranded single-use plastic bags. In the category of bottled water cups, Club was found most often with 101 packages, while paper packaging was dominated by Pop Mie with 54 packages. WALHI said the findings could be used to pressure producers to reduce single-use packaging, in line with Environment and Forestry Ministerial Regulation No. 75 of 2019. Pantai Sidem was chosen because it is the mouth of the Niyama River, which carries waste from upstream to the coast.
