US threatened curbs on Anthropic’s top AI models for foreigners
What’s new: A Commerce Department letter warned access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 could require licenses worldwide, with civil and criminal penalties for violations.
The Trump administration warned Anthropic last week that foreign nationals could be barred from using its most advanced AI models without US government approval. In a Friday letter obtained by Bloomberg News, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ordered the company not to provide Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to foreign nationals anywhere in the world unless it first secured a Commerce Department license. The letter threatened civil and criminal penalties if Anthropic failed to comply. Lutnick did not spell out why the restriction was needed, but cited US export-control laws that let the government limit civilian technology with potential intelligence or military use by adversaries.
