US State Department slide misplaced every country on Africa map
What's new: Reuters found an OpenAI watermark on the image shown at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro.
A State Department presentation at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro displayed a map that misplaced every country in Africa, drawing criticism from attendees who posted screenshots online. Reuters reviewed video of the slide and reported the image carried an OpenAI watermark, indicating it was made with OpenAI tools. The department accepted responsibility and said a team member hastily altered the slide deck before the event. The presentation was part of a session on new US health agreements led by Jeff Graham, the top US health envoy overseeing PEPFAR. Among the errors, Nigeria appeared in the Sahara, Mozambique was moved to the Horn of Africa and Ivory Coast was placed on the opposite side of the continent.
