US senators and Trump align on Russia sanctions bill

What's new: The measure would target countries that keep buying Russian oil and gas if Moscow refuses a Ukraine peace deal.

Four US senators said they reached an agreement with President Donald Trump’s administration to advance updated legislation that would widen sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine. The bipartisan group — Richard Blumenthal, Lindsey Graham, Jeanne Shaheen and Roger Wicker — said the bill would move forward soon. Graham has worked for months with Republicans and Democrats on the measure, which would penalize countries doing business with Russia, including buyers of Russian energy exports, if Moscow does not negotiate a peace deal with Kyiv. The push comes as Russia steps up attacks on civilians, the senators said, and after Trump’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara signaled a warmer tone between the two leaders.
