US presses Europe for Ebola travel curbs before World Cup

What's new: Washington warned that weaker European controls could trigger tighter US rules on trans-Atlantic travel.

The Trump administration is pushing European governments to tighten travel restrictions on people recently in Ebola-affected parts of Africa, arguing that gaps in Europe could raise the risk of cases reaching the United States before and during the FIFA World Cup. The US already bars non-citizens who have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan within 21 days and routes returning Americans through selected airports for screening. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the outbreak with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on June 9. The European Union separately increased its Ebola response funding by 16.5 million euros, adding to 15 million euros pledged last month.
