The notice has been sent by the US State Department to Congress, according to a report cited by Reuters. Four other posts on the list are St George's in Grenada, Nagoya in Japan, Douala in Cameroon, and Winnipeg in Canada. The St George's post has embassy status, while Medan, Nagoya and Winnipeg are consulates, and Douala is an embassy branch office. The closures are described as a rare step because they are not driven by a specific geopolitical crisis, but by an efficiency push. The US State Department has not confirmed the closures, but said its focus is ensuring the US diplomatic footprint remains efficient and effective.
