US plans to cut NATO Europe force package by about 50 jets

Why it matters: The shift would reduce NATO surveillance, refueling and strike capacity as Washington presses allies to spend more on defense.

The United States plans to sharply reduce the aircraft and ships it makes available for NATO operations in Europe, according to a New York Times report cited by The Straits Times. The plan would cut US F-16 and F-15E fighter jets assigned for NATO missions to about 100 from roughly 150, while maritime reconnaissance aircraft would fall to 15 from 26. The US also would withdraw eight aerial refueling tankers and redeploy a missile-launching submarine, an aircraft carrier and several warships. One of two bomber groups tied to Europe’s defense could also be moved. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said the change reflects a push for Europe and Canada to build more capability and rely less on US forces.
