US Mint to strike Trump $1 coin for 250th anniversary

What's new: The design may face legal scrutiny because an advisory coinage committee did not review it before production.

The U.S. Mint will begin producing a commemorative $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday. The coin, which will have a gold-like finish rather than being made of gold, is expected to go on sale in the fall. The administration argues a 2020 law governing Semiquincentennial commemorative coins allows a living president to appear on the front of the piece. But the rollout is drawing questions over process. Federal law requires the Treasury secretary to consult the Commission of Fine Arts and obtain review from the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. A member of that committee told ABC News the panel never reviewed a Trump portrait design after a proposed December meeting failed to reach a quorum.
