US C-17 military transport plane lands in Moscow from Riga

What's new: Flight data showed the aircraft came from Latvia, but US and Kremlin officials gave no details on cargo, passengers or purpose.

A US military transport plane landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport on Tuesday after flying from Riga, according to Flightradar24 data cited by multiple outlets. The aircraft was identified as a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III with tail number 07-7181. Tracking data showed it had reached Riga on Aug. 23 from the Camp Springs air base near Washington before continuing to Russia. Neither side explained the flight. The Kremlin said it had no information, while a US defense spokesperson gave no details. Reuters said it could not verify whether the plane carried cargo or passengers. The flight appeared to be the first direct trip by a US-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia since a January visit by Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner for talks with Vladimir Putin on Ukraine.
