UN backs Cuba embargo resolution 130-17 as support hits 30-year low

What's new: Support fell sharply from last year's 165 votes, with 25 abstentions and 17 countries opposing the measure.

The U.N. General Assembly approved its annual resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba by a 130-17 vote, with 25 abstentions, the weakest backing for the measure in three decades. The nonbinding vote still delivered a clear rebuke to Washington, but support dropped markedly from last year's 165-7 result with 12 abstentions. Germany, Italy and Latvia were among the countries that abstained for the first time, while Bosnia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Lithuania, Morocco, North Macedonia, Paraguay and Slovenia were among those voting no. The vote followed a heated clash this week between U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on the General Assembly floor.
