UI conducts internal review after Pride Month post stirs dispute

The university said the post reflected the editorial stance of a student group, not the official position of Universitas Indonesia.

Universitas Indonesia is conducting an internal review and evaluation after a social media post by the student activity unit Suara Mahasiswa UI on Pride Month and sexual orientation and gender identity stirred controversy. Director of Public Relations, Media, Government and International Affairs UI Erwin Agustian Panigoro said the content reflected the editorial views of SUMA UI and did not represent the official stance of the university or the wider academic community. UI said it respects freedom of expression in academic life, but requires that it be conveyed politely, not provocatively, and in line with academic ethics. The university also said all student activities must comply with the UI Code of Ethics and Student Discipline Regulations. In the disputed post, SUMA UI highlighted discrimination and persecution against some LGBTQ+ communities in Indonesia, including on campus.
