Uganda approves troop deployment to Gaza under Trump ceasefire plan
What's new: Kampala publicly backed joining a proposed 20,000-member force, though timing and legal terms remain unresolved.
Uganda's parliament approved a motion Thursday allowing the country to send troops to Gaza if a proposed multinational security force is deployed under President Donald Trump's ceasefire plan. The vote marked Uganda's first public acknowledgment that it is prepared to take part in the International Stabilization Force envisioned for areas of Gaza outside Israeli control. Defense Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka told lawmakers Trump, through emissaries, asked President Yoweri Museveni in July to contribute forces. Kiwanuka said a status of forces agreement would be signed after the vote. The force's deployment timeline remains unclear as the broader Gaza plan has stalled and Israel has raised security concerns.
