Typhoon Dolphin nears China with 162 kph winds, flood alerts

Typhoon Dolphin was expected to make landfall on China’s east coast Sunday night into Monday after crossing Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, where it injured six people and cut power to more than 50,000 buildings. China’s National Meteorological Centre forecast sustained winds of up to 162 kph as the storm approached Zhejiang and nearby provinces. Authorities moved offshore workers to safety, ordered ships back to port and stepped up checks at reservoirs, mountain streams and construction sites. Shanghai’s Yangshan port cleared berths and sheltered more than 500 small and medium-sized vessels. Officials warned that major rivers including the Qiantang, Yong, Jiao and Shuiyang could flood as Dolphin slows inland, prolonging heavy rain.
