Typhoon Champi kills 1 in Taiwan as 931 flights are canceled

What's new: Nearly 1,300 people were evacuated, and the storm was forecast to track next toward southern Japan.

Taiwan largely shut down Friday as Typhoon Champi neared the island, leaving one person dead, 94 injured and forcing mass travel cancellations. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said the storm had weakened from super typhoon strength but still carried gusts around 191 kph near its center, with a wind field broad enough to cover most of the island. Authorities evacuated almost 1,300 people from mountainous areas, while coastal towns were warned of gusts above 150 kph and heavy rain near 1 meter in northern highlands. Taiwan canceled all 262 domestic flights and 669 international services for Friday. The storm was then expected to pass near northeastern Taiwan before turning north toward waters off China and southern Japan.
