Trump threatens to rename Lake Ontario as Canada trade fight deepens
What's new: Canada signaled it will ignore the post, while the threat widened a standoff already marked by fresh tariffs.
President Donald Trump threatened to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” as the U.S.-Canada trade dispute intensified. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that the United States was seriously considering the change because it did not expect to do much business with Ontario any longer. Lake Ontario, one of North America’s five Great Lakes, borders Ontario and New York. Asked about the post, Canada’s minister responsible for U.S. trade, Dominic LeBlanc, told CNBC that Ottawa had decided months ago not to respond to daily social media posts from Trump or his cabinet. The remark followed Trump’s earlier move last year to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
