President Donald Trump said July 29 that the United States would strike Iran "very hard" after an attack on US forces in Jordan, signaling a sharper response as fighting escalates. Speaking at the White House, Trump said Washington would also see whether an agreement could eventually end the war between the two countries. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said July 28 they fired several ballistic missiles at a US air base and a military center in Jordan, while the US military said it intercepted multiple ballistic missiles. Trump also said he had been briefed on a drone hit on a US-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta. Asked about a Reuters report that Iran may receive up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense launchers, Trump said that would be surprising and cited prior assurances from Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
